A kaleidoscope

Imagine a kaleidoscope in your hands

and the ferocious, animal wish

to tear it apart – to reveal not magic,

but plain, single coloured squares,

no longer shards of magic

but complacent, ordinary plastic.

These are my thoughts – majestic fractals

when held up to the pinprick

of natural light – moving pictures

of the past, present and future,

different faces, different people

flitting and dancing on a canvas:

a mirage of colour

until you break them in two,

find these thoughts and feelings divisible

and finally find yourself,

so painfully ordinary too.
