Picture side up

i spread out all of my puzzle pieces

turn them all picture side up

and give each of them names:

before i cut off all of their edges

shapely and jagged

and place them on top of one another

because i know i’ll never get them to fit

to coexist in peace beside each other

instead i shall keep them

piled high in my pockets

close at hand to retrieve and replace

to look at the pictures of grief

alongside love and realise

they’re not so different after all.
