Sunlight streams

Sunlight filters past

the Roman red bricks

in streams of coral,

the sun is setting

but I remember it rising

the morning we met here.

You appeared from the shadowy arches

with your back to the light

as it crept steadily upward;

polishing every brick and crevice

with Helios’ trusted gallop.

I forgot to notice the sky afterwards

because the blue in your eyes

and smile upon your face –

as cliche as it sounds –

were more than I could handle

so early in the day,

and I remember how it felt

to be swept into your arms,

enclosed in a safety

I could only find in your grasp.
