Lost and Mine

They say

‘What do you call a penguin

in the desert?’

They say

‘Lost.’

I say

‘What do you call a heart

which always breaks?’

I say

‘Mine.’

But apparently, it’s not the same.

The wandering penguin

and my ever wandering heart,

are not the same.

He walks into dunes of sand,

flipper deep, I walk into

other peoples’ lives hoping

there is something I can fix.

But apparently, it’s not the same

this feeling of incomparable loss.

The penguin in the desert is lost.

My heart which wades neck deep

to save others, knows too much loss.

But apparently, it’s not the same.
