heartache
it is a warm summer’s day
or a bitter winter’s eve
a visitor – the new friend
the old friend with darned holes
in your friendship
to accompany a bar of chocolate
or the tears you’ve spent
to puncture an awkward silence
and fill it with whistling steam
and ‘do you take sugar in your tea?’
more heartache
because sometimes one cup
is not enough to quell the storm
rising and twisting in your chest
cracking ribs and ripping your heart
from its foundations to whisk
it away from home
we’re not in Kansas any more, Dot
it is polite, etiquette
at the Mad Hatter’s tea party
it’s late
and you should eat
but the night has crawled in fast
vast around the lintels
and beckons you to bed

Very original writing, I love how this one unfolded so gradually and gently… Steeped in feeling, it percolated into my soul… You brewed up something amazing!
