Our hearts

Dying isn’t cowardly

and talking takes bravery,

convincing our tongues

carrying their stories,

they are the lifeguards

swimming for our hearts.

It takes a second to keep on wishing

for our pulse to stop

and restart,

the joy you feel

when you open your curtains

and the sun is shining,

when you witness a mother

leading her ducklings

to safe roadside harbour,

when you look in the mirror

and for once do not feel the need

to pick at your skin,

when you taste sugar,

when you make the perfect cup of tea,

when you snuggle into fresh linen,

when you kiss your lover goodbye

in the knowledge they will return,

when you smile at your friend

and they are breathing too,

smiling right back at you.
