In the Rome of old

they would have built a statue,

erected a theatre

and named it after you.

Your essence, presence

captured in humble resplendence.

A mortal man whose actions

deserve to be carved in marble

leaving indelible indents

for all to remark upon and marvel.

In the world of today

mere words, my words

seek to hold you high

in hallelujah splendour

and mark you as a mortal

of merit and virtus,

of honesty and patience,

unconditional love and forgiveness.

My words soft and gentle

seek to celebrate you as more

than mere mettle to be tested

as more than simply a granddaughter’s companion

but elevate you, as champion.
