A House on Fire

His hands reached forward

in frozen submission

the smoke she left, curling

between his knuckles

the smoke from the fire she lit,

a sturdy house reduced to cinders,

dying embers glowing gently

below the blanket of darkness

in which she visited.

Her smiles appeared like shadows

in the charred windows

haunting his own

as he dragged his hands

through the rubble

charcoal remains of his sanity;

every waking moment

powdered with the soot left behind

when her eyes smoldered

and she dropped the match

at his feet.
